Pair of handsome ebonized rosewood and ivory carvings depicting Benton, the only feminine member of the seven gods of happiness, sometimes characterized as the goddess of understanding, or wealth, and of music. She is usually shown with a serpent, and with her musical instrument, the biwa. Each figure sits on separate finely carved openwork conforming base.
